South Tama's girls track and field team has been busy during the past two weeks, competing at three meets, despite having other canceled because of weather.

STC finished second at each of the three meets during the past two weeks. On April 15, the Lady Trojans finished second to Pella at the Bondurant Invitational. Pella scored 202 points, while the Lady Trojans totaled 128, which was 34 ahead of third-place Earlham.

On the following day, they placed runner-up to Pekin at the Montezuma Relays. Pekin scored 167 points, while the Lady Trojans scored 140, which was 55 ahead of third-place Prairie City Monroe.

The Lady Trojans next competed on Monday at PCM. Pella won the meet with 101 points. STC scored 67 points in the shortened meed, which ended with six races because of heavy rainfall.

"We had two really nice meets back-to-back," coach George Corum said. "We finished second to perennial powerhouse Pella. We don't like it, but it is what it is. We had a strong finish at Bondurant. Then we came back the following night and we were kind of leg weary at Montezuma. We were runner-up to Pekin, who is a powerhouse in their class. They are extremely tough, but we were in the fight. Our times weren't going to be good that night, but position was important, because it was cold and a little rainy.

"The temperature wasn't that bad, but the rain didn't let up," Corum said about Monday's meet at PCM. "I'm a little discouraged about that."

On Monday, Taylor Ellenbecker was the lone winner for the Lady Trojans. She won the 3,000-meter run in a time of 11:43.94. STC had several second-place finishes at the meet. Samantha Holtz placed second in the shot put and discus, Shelby Bradley finished runner-up in the long jump, the 4x200-meter relay and 4x800-meter relay also finished second. Bradley, Kiley Culbertson, Belle Tyynismaa and Jade Rohach teamed up for the 4x200, while Kelsey Kupka, Tyynismaa, Madie Bacon and Trisha Walz ran the 4x800.

"We had a good meet, Corum said. "But once the rain came, it made things hard, like Sam in the discus. The rain made it so hard. Taylor Ellenbecker ran really well in the 3,000 and knocked off like 14 seconds of her PR. The 4x800 knocked off 14 seconds. Our shuttle hurdle relay dropped almost two seconds off of its time. There was some good competition down there. It was good to run against those teams and we ran well."

South Tama won four events at Montezuma. Holtz won the discus and placed second in the shot put. Rohach won the long jump, while Bradley finished second in the same event. The STC 4x200 team of Bradley, Rohach, Tyynismaa and Nicole Berry won its race. The other victory came in the shuttle hurdle relay, which was comprised of Bradley, Kaleigh Sieck, Julie Wise and Brooke Keller.

The Lady Trojans also finished second in the high jump, distance medley, 200-meter dash and 4x100-meter relay. Bacon jumped 4-feet, 10-inches in the high jump to place second, while Rohach finished runner-up in the 200 dash.

The distance medley team of Berry, Sonya Peters, Samantha Magpie and Kupka placed second. The 4x100 team consisted of Bradley, Rohach, Sieck and Tyynismaa.

At Bondurant, Holtz swept the throwing events, Bacon was second in the high jump, Rohach won the 200 dash and two relays finished second. The 4x800 relay team of Kupka, Bacon, Walz and Ellenbecker placed second. STC's distance medley team of Culbertson, Berry, Magpie and Kupka finished runner-up in their race.

STC was scheduled to run at Grinnell Tuesday but it was canceled because of weather. STC will compete at Ballard on Friday and then at Grundy Center for NICL meet on Monday. Holtz competed at the Drake Relays on Thursday.
