Doubles victories boost South Tama girls over Marion

The South Tama County girls tennis team defeated Marion on Monday at the STC Tennis Complex by a score of 6-3. The Trojans split singles action with the visiting team before dominating doubles play to secure the win.

The Trojans notched a crucial win at No. 1 singles by junior Emily Martin. Facing Joiah Bandfield, Martin played a steady game to keep pace with her talented opponent. Martin fell behind 6-7 before battling back to level the set at 7-7. Bandfield edged ahead again at 8-7, before Martin grabbed the 16th game to force a tiebreaker.

Martin jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the tiebreaker and then built that lead to 6-3. Bandfield roared back to even things at 7-7. Martin scored the final two points of the match to register an impressive 9-8(7) win.

STC junior Madison Baack overpowered Kimberlyn Spurlin at No. 2 singles. Baack posted an 8-2 win. Marion's Sydney Larsen nabbed an 8-5 victory over South Tama's Tori Appelgate at No. 3 singles. Junior Regina Balderas fell behind early in her match with Madison Kisling at No. 4 singles. Balderas battled back to get within one game late; however, Kisling held on for an 8-6 win for Marion.

South Tama junior Caitlin Svacina jumped all over her opponent from Marion early at No. 5 singles. Svacina trounced Danica Chalstrom by a score of 8-1. Taylor Muhlstein came up short against Marion's Alyssa Thomas at No. 6 singles. Despite falling behind early, she fought back before falling by a score of 8-5.

Doubles action proved to be the right play for the Trojans on the night. The No. 1 doubles Team of Martin/Baack posted a big win over Bandfield/Kisling 8-3 to improve to 2-0 on the early season. Appelgate/Balderas fell behind 1-4 at No. 2 doubles against Spurlin/Larsen before righting the ship. They teamed to nab seven of the next nine games to register an impressive 8-6 come from behind win and remain undefeated on the season.

At No. 3 doubles, Svacina teamed up with senior Leah Mann to add to the Trojans' Win Total. They defeated Chalstrom/Thomas 8-4 and also improved to 2-0 on the season.

The STC junior varsity squad split the meet score with Marion 4-4. The Trojans got wins from Natasha Musgrave/Taylor Muhlstein (6-0), Ali Vavra/Mollie Morgan (6-0), Jessica Schuur/Sydney Meek (6-1) and Mackenzie Mcfate/Megan Mann (6-4).

The Trojans next face AGWSR on Friday in Tama.
