South Tama's boys golf squad played in its first tournament of the season last week without ever practicing on a course yet this spring.

Despite not seeing a course before the tournament, the Trojans' team score was significantly lower than their best score last year. Their team score of 179 was 19 strokes better than the best score during the 2012 season. The team score was good enough to finish third at the Norwalk Tournament.

Leading the way for STC was Kolton Smith, who shot a 39. Alec Hill was close behind, shooting a 42 on the nine-hole course. Colson Frakes and Trent Banes rounded out the top four STC golfers, as they each shot rounds of 49.

"I thought we did really good especially for our first meet and our first time playing on a course at any time this year," coach Nate Doran said. "Last year, our best varsity score was 198, which we blew out of the water this year with a 179. We still have a ways to go to really start to compete, but we are going in the right direction and things are looking positive. Kolton Smith will really be a player to watch but I have some new faces that can really help out the team this year the is always exciting, as well as some returners that received a lot of varsity experience last year."

The STC junior varsity squad shot a team score of 204.

Returning players for the Trojans are Kolton Smith, Alec Hill, Trent Banes, Taylon Anderson, Darien Taylor, Donovan Horne and Aron Bartling. Most of those players saw varsity action last year. Some of the new players include Ian Slagle, Colson Frakes, Kade Steuhm, Jaret Prabasco, Talon Lamb, Nick Vestley and Damen Whitebreast.

STC is scheduled to host Grinnell in a coed meet at home Friday.
