MARSHALLTOWN The IVCCD Board of Directors held a public hearing and then approved a 2013-14 estimated certified budget, lowering the local property tax asking for area residents for the fourth consecutive year. Chief Financial Officer Kathy Pink explained that the estimated budget sets the levy rate, which dictates the local taxpayer support for the local community college district. Iowa Valley's levy rate will lower the tax rate for local property owners 8 cents, from $1.88711 per $1,000 valuation to $1.80616.
In personnel matters, the Board approved early retirement applications from Jacque Heintz, Marshall County Career Development Center (CDC) Coordinator, and Linda Bowman, Administrative Assistant of Finance for Ellsworth Community College. It was noted that additional early retirement applications are expected to be on the Board's April agenda, because the deadline for filing applications is the end of March. The Board also approved a termination of employment and teacher's continuing contract for a faculty member.
In other matters, the Board: approved a digital license agreement between Marshalltown Community College and Films Media Group for a "Films on Demand" subscription plan; approved a second curriculum articulation with Palmer College of Chiropractic; and approved an agreement with Pearson VUE for Iowa Valley to be an approved GED testing site. A closed session was held to discuss collective bargaining strategy, but no action was taken upon returning to open session.
Fourteen donations were accepted by the Board, including 12 for the Orpheum Theater Center. Church Women United donated $1,400 to the Iowa Falls GED and ESL programs, and Ed Jorgensen donated $500 to Iowa Valley Grinnell for paralegal scholarships.
The next regular meeting of the IVCCD Board of Directors will be at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls.
