Joanne Jane Hartman-Ombruni

Joanne Jane Hartman-Ombruni of Sun City West, Ariz., formerly of Toledo, passed away Dec. 26, 2012, after a short battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Joanne was born July 7, 1936, in Council Bluffs, to L.E. and Gladys Legg. She attended grade school and graduated from Austin High School in Chicago in 1954. She was an Iowa State graduate.

On Aug. 12, 1967, Joanne was married to Donald Hartman. Don, his son, Jon, Joanne, and her son, Brad, lived in Toledo. Joanne taught home economics at South Tama and also at the Iowa State Juvenile Home.

In 1974, Joanne purchased the Quaint Gift Shop in Toledo until her retirement in 1989. In 1989, Don and Joanne bought a home in Sun City West, Ariz., where they spent their winter months. In 1991, they sold their home in Toledo and built a new home in Guttenberg, Iowa, on Abel Island, where they made their summer home until Don's death in 2003.

Joanne was an active member of the community. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Tama and served in several capacities within the church. She was also a member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Sun City West. She was a loyal Iowa State fan.

Joanne's most pleasurable hours were spent on or around the water; she enjoyed boating, fishing and many other water activities. She had many friends with whom she enjoyed spending time.

Joanne loved her family and will be missed deeply by all who knew and loved her. She had a special fondness of her grandchildren and her granddogs.

On Nov. 19, 2005, Joanne was married to her childhood friend, Paul Ombruni, in Omaha, Neb. They made their home in Sun City West. Joanne and Paul enjoyed many wonderful trips and cruises together, one of which they just returned from in October, 2012, to Italy.

Joanne had been a member of both the Tama and Toledo chapters of the Order of Eastern Star and had held the position of Worthy Matron. She also was a member of the PEO Sisterhood belonging to Chapter DF in Iowa and continuing her affiliation with Chapter CL in Arizona, holding vice president and president positions. She was a member of the Iowa State Alumni Association.

Joanne is survived by her husband, Paul Ombruni; a son, Jon Hartman and his wife, Lori (Lyon), and grandchildren, Kyle and Sam, of Phoenix, Ariz.; a son, Brad Davis and his wife, Bonnie (Batterson), of Alburnett; Paul's son, David Ombruni of Omaha, Neb.; granddaughter, Brooke Davis of Marion; her brother, Charles Legg and his wife, Angie, of Tarzana, Calif.; and two sisters-in-law, Velda Sullivan of Waterloo and Ardith Hartman of Waverly.

Joanne was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; a sister-in-law, Betty Schmidt; two brothers-in-law, Merle Sullivan and Del Hartman; and her parents.

Joanne requested a private service at a later date.
