South Tama Middle School's seventh grade football team won the second game of its final night this fall, after losing the first to Newton.

In the opening game, the Trojans defense had a hard time getting off the field to allow the offense a chance to score. Newton controlled the ball during the entire first quarter and finished its drive in the second quarter with an 18-yard touchdown run. However, the two-point conversion failed and Newton led 6-0.

Newton added a second score before halftime on a 15-yard pass, but again failed to convert the two-point play. Newton led 12-0 at half.

South Tama received the ball in the third quarter and began driving down the field, until it fumbled and Newton recovered it. Newton scored its final touchdown on a 25-yard run in the fourth quarter as it won 18-0.

Colton Vest and Tanner Probasco led the Trojans with 10 and 18 yards rushing, respectively. Lane Koch had one completion to Gabe Shields for 18 yards. Vest also had one completion to Rian Simpson for 12 yards.

Defensively, Probasco led the Trojans with nine tackles, while Mario Moncado also had eight for the game. Contributing tackles for STC was Gannon Ferneau (5), Christian Novak (4), Logun Freese (4), Josh Thiesen (4), Josh Konicek (2), Gabe Backen (2) and seven players with one tackle each.

In the second game of the night, South Tama turned the tide on Newton. STC kicked off to start the game, but Newton fumbled. Konicek recovered the ball and the Trojans took over on offense. Taylor Boldt finished the drive with an 18-yard touchdown run, giving STC a 6-0 lead after a missed two-point conversion.

In the 2nd quarter, South Tama scored another touchdown on a six-yard run by Pedro Rodriguez. Nick Ryan ran the ball in for the two-point conversion. South Tama forced another fumble that was recovered by Backen. STC led 14-0 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the South Tama defense continued to play well and keep Newton off the scoreboard. Backen recovered another fumble to help the Trojans defense. The Trojans scored again in the fourth quarter. Ryan ran 22 yards into the end zone and Rodriguez scored the conversion on the ground. Later in the quarter, Nathan Lasley intercepted a Newton pass and locked up the STC victory, 22-0.

Freese and Boldt were the two leading rushers for South Tama. Freese carried the ball eight times for 39 yards and Boldt had five rushes for 34 yards. Ryan also added 22 yards rushing, while Rodriguez and Shields ran for double digits, too.

Defensively, Shields was the leading tackler with seven for the game. Ryan, Backen and Justus Ward each added six tackles each. Also contributing tackles were Scott Garcia (4), Slade St. John (4), Bryce Dickenson (2), Shaye Betz (2), Konicek (2), Lasley (2) and Freese. STC recovered four fumbles in the game. Backen had two, while Konicek and Ward had the others.
