The sports lover in all of us

South Tama sports teams are all doing well. Way to go Trojans!! I think it was Vince Lombardi that said, “Winning isn’t everything, but the will to win is.” Kudos to all the Trojans out there and keep striving to win. Speaking of sports, how is your NFL team doing? My Kansas City Chiefs are not starting out well but it’s the end that counts, right? Go Chiefs!! Iowa football fans enjoyed an excellent game last Saturday with a tremendous win over Wisconsin. 5-0, same as the Trojan football team. The Hawkeyes host Illinois this Saturday while the “Clones will attempt to get a winning record again as they travel to Texas Tech. The Panthers of UNI head to chilly North Dakota State to see if they can get back on the winning track. Good luck to all of them.

But it’s not all football. For some of us, the best part of the year begins. The Baseball Playoffs!! As this is written, the Yankees are set to wallop the Houston Astros and the beloved Cubbies will clobber the Pirates. However, as you read this, these two games will already be over. Did the Yankees and Cubs win????? You know and I don’t. Imagine a New York Yankee and Chicago Cub World Series!!

A couple more things before this column is done; some random Sheda thoughts and a short “pop-quiz.”

You never appreciate what you have until it’s gone, right? Toilet paper is a good example.

Golf is a game in which you yell “fore,” shoot a six and write down a five.

Do you know that you can go a lot longer after you think you can’t?

Tell a guy there are 400 billion star and he believes you. Tell him a bench has wet paint and he touches it.

Have you ever wondered why Doctors call what they do “practice.”

And finally, life is about waiting for the storm to pass but rather learning how to dance in the rain.

Now the “pop-quiz, (answers- Page 5) How many can name the starting line-up of Abbot & Costello’s “Who’s On First” routine?

If Tom Brady has three under-inflated footballs and you take two of them away, how many would you have?

Who is the only man to play in both a Major League Baseball game and NFL Football game on the same day? Hint: Is it Bo Jackson, Jim Thorpe or Deion Sanders?

Mohammed Ali had a tremendous boxing career, right? But he did lose sometimes. How many professional bouts did he actually lose, 3, 4, 5 or 6?

And finally, who’s picture has been on the cover of Sports Illustrated the most times; Mohammed Ali, Magic Johnson, Jack Nicklaus or Michael Jordan?

No way you even come close to all right. Especially #1. But it sure is a funny routine. And another thing, I bet that most of the South Tama Trojan football team don’t even know who Howard Cosell was!! Only “old-timers’ like you and me remember “the mouth that roared.”

Go Trojans!!!
