Movies, movies, movies

John Sheda

Every once in a while Deb and I enjoy an afternoon delight. We stop at one of our local restaurants to enjoy a late morning breakfast and then go to one of those afternoon movies. The price in the afternoons are usually a tad cheaper and we always pipe in that we are “seniors,” and it’s then practically free. That’s what I meant by afternoon delight. What in the world were you thinking?

Last week we went to “The War Room.” An excellent movie by any standards. A well made faith-based movie that just about had me ready to clean out my closet, (an arduous task indeed), and design my own war room. I highly recommend it but ONLY if your looking for something positive, uplifting, encouraging and inspiring to watch. No one cussed, no gratuitous nudity or sex scenes and I don’t think anyone was shot, killed, maimed or blown up.

However on the way home, Deb and I started arguing, (sharing our thoughts), on our favorite movies. We agreed on a few but not many. For example, I loved “Silence of the Lambs” and Deb truly enjoys “The Sound of Music.” “Psycho” was a hit for me while Deb is dazzled with “The Wizard of Oz.” So we did have a slight difference of opinion but we kinda agreed that these ten below were favorites we both could agree on. Sorta. We limited ourselves to movies based on a true story and sports movies. At least to some degree.

And here are our favorites in no particular order. If we had tried this, we might still not be talking!!!! Drum roll please….

Schindler’s List

A Beautiful Mind

Captain Phillips

Rudy, (my all-time, all time favorite)

A League of Their Own, (“There’s no crying in baseball”)

Remember The Titans

We Are Marshall

Sea Biscuit

Brian’s Song, (The original version with James Caan & Billy Dee Williams). No, dog-gone it, I did not cry!!!

Miracle, (U.S.A’s 1980 Olympic victory over USSR)

Field of Dreams, (What? This isn’t true?)

Hoosiers.

Eight Men Out.

Apollo 13

Well, this is our top ten. Ok, maybe it’s a couple, three or four more than ten, but you stop and make the attempt to name your favorite ten movies.

Betcha can’t pick just ten. Heck, we didn’t include Silence of the Lambs or The Sound of Music. Oh, wait, there’s also Catch Me If You Can, Patton, Mississippi Burning, Awakenings, Walk The Line, The Hustler, Bull Durham, Tin Cup, etc. Let me know if any of these crept into your top ten at jsheda@indytel.com or call me at 319.327.4640. Oh, wait, I have a few more!!!!!!
