Agnes "Wabinenosoge" Kapayou

Agnes “Wabinenosoge” Kapayou, 83, of Tama, passed away Sunday, July 12, 2015, at Premier Estates of Toledo under the care of Hospice Compassus. Traditional Graveside Services will be held Tuesday, July 14, 2015, at 2 p.m. at Morgan Cemetery on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama with Michael Keahna as speaker. Larry Lasley will be head pallbearer. A Traditional Wake will be held Monday evening at the Fox Clan Ceremonial Building on the Settlement.

Agnes was born on September 16, 1931, the daughter of Lucille Old Bear Kapayou and Loman Kapayou. She was a graduate of Tama High School and had received some nurses training. Agnes was a Community Health Representative for the tribe and after retirement volunteered to take many people around to their appointments and activities.

She was a cook for many events on the Settlement and had formerly worked as a CNA at the Tama County Home for many years. Agnes loved country music and going to pow-wows, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family.

Survivors include her son Luke (Robin) Kapayou of Toledo; two daughters, Mary Goose and Doreen Goose both of Des Moines; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Sylvia Kapayou, Vivian Kapayou and Joyce Kapayou all of Tama; many nieces and nephews and their families. She was also an adopted mother, grandmother and sister to many.

Preceding her in death were her parents; a sister, Gladys Goose; and brothers, Edward, Everett and Eugene Kapayou.

Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home, Tama-Toledo is assisting the family with the arrangements.
