Barbretta Marie Crain

Barbretta Marie Crain, 63, of Toledo, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2015, at Premier Estates of Toledo under the care of Iowa River Hospice. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, July 2, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at the Christ United Methodist Church Worship Center in Toledo with Pastor Brian Oliver officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 1, 2015, from 4-8 p.m. at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.

Barbretta Marie Caruth was born March 14, 1952, in Iowa Falls, Iowa, the daughter of Clifford Glen and Shirley Mae (Tjarks) Caruth.

She attended the Iowa Falls Community Schools graduating with the Class of 1970. After high school, she attended Ellsworth Community College, Iowa Falls.

On Aug. 8, 1971, Barb was united in marriage to Rex Lewis Crain at the First Christian Church in Iowa Falls. Barb and Rex then moved to California and she was employed at J.C. Penney from September until January of 1972. They moved from California to Steamboat Rock, Iowa, where she was employed at United Suppliers in Eldora as a secretary for two years until she decided to raise her family. In September 1983, they moved to Toledo, Iowa. Here she was employed at the State Bank of Toledo as a teller for a number of years. Then Barb went to work for the Tama newspaper as a typist until she received her insurance license and went to work for American Family Insurance. Barb then decided to take a job with South Tama Schools as the transportation secretary where she was employed until 2014. She was a volunteer on the Wieting Theater guild for many years. Barb was involved in Marshalltown and Tama County Community Band and was the inspiration for “Barb” Wire Ranch. Barb enjoyed traveling and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also loved her new great grandchild, even though he has only been here for three weeks.

Barbretta is survived by her husband of 43 years, Rex of Toledo; her children, Ryan (Susan) Crain of Toledo and Brenda Adams of Tama; six grandchildren, Lacey, Garritt, Wyatt, Colton, Kennedy and Nathan; one great-grandson, Asher; her mother, Shirley Caruth of Iowa Falls; one brother, Glenn Caruth of Iowa Falls; six nephews; and one niece.

She was preceded in death by her father, C. Glen Caruth; her father-in-law, Eldon Crain and mother-in-law, Luella Crain; and a sister-in-law, Sandi Caruth.

A memorial fund has been established.
