Helen Mildred (Backen) Wiener

Helen Mildred (Backen) Wiener, 79, of Tama passed away Sunday, November 23, 2014 at home under the care of Iowa River Hospice. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at 11:00 AM at St. John Lutheran Church in rural Tama with Rev. Dr. T. Edwards Breed officiating. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in rural Tama. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 from 5-7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.

Helen was born on March 9, 1935, in Tama, Iowa, the daughter of Julius and Vera (Hagge) Backen. She graduated from Tama High School in 1952. She married John Wiener on November 12, 1958 and had six children together. They later divorced. Helen was a homemaker and worked on the farm. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in rural Tama. Helen liked gardening, sewing and cooking. Her greatest joy was the time she spent with her family. Survivors include her children, Debra (Bob) Husak of Toledo, Janet Houghton of Tama, LeAnn (Bill) Finnigan of Farmington, NY, Karla (Jim) Novotny of Tama, Dennis Wiener of Tama and Jerald Wiener of Montour; four grandchildren, Brian, Amy and Laura Novotny and Nicole Berry; one sister, Hazel Moyer of Toledo; one brother, Robert (Dorothy) Backen of Tama; one sister-in-law, Mildred Backen of Tama; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers, Lyle and Leo Backen; a brother-in-law, Carroll “Cap” Moyer; a sister-in-law, Beverly Graff; and a nephew, Jay Backen. A memorial fund has been established.
