“The American Legion of Iowa Boys State is a week-long, hands-on youth civics leadership experience in the operation of the democratic form of government. Students learn more in one week than they would in a semester of high school civics. In addition, there are opportunities to win scholarships and earn college credit to applicable schools.”

In 2023, STC incoming senior Holden Schrimer represented STC in the 2023 iteration of Boys State. STC Social Studies Mr. Craig Harrison (an active member of the program) informed Schrimer of his inclusion in the event

“Mr. Harrison contacted me in March and told me I was selected. I was excited,” Schrimer said.

Three months later, Schrimer packed his bags and headed for six days of civic growth and an opportunity of a lifetime.

“We all had the same experience coming in, with little information coming in about it. The first couple days were campaigning for our positions, things went pretty slow, but as we understood more we all enjoyed it more. Once all the state positions were filled up I chose to run for board of supervisors,” he said.

Schrimer was elected to one of two groups of county supervisors

“I think overall it was a great time, I liked meeting new friends and we got really close after the six days. It was good to get hands-on experience,” he said. “I learned a lot more there than I probably would’ve at school.”
