Following last night’s 2 inches of snow in Tama-Toledo, National Weather Service forecasters are preparing for a heavier round of snow storms to impact the area Monday through Tuesday morning.

Through most of Tama County, the storm is expected to drop 6 to 8 inches of snow.

Tama, Marshall and Benton counties are under a winter storm watch until Tuesday morning with Poweshiek County under a winter storm warning as the storm is expected to move in from the south and drop higher snowfall totals south of I-80.

The National Weather Service reports a wintry mix and heavy snow are expected to begin falling in Tama-Toledo around 9 a.m. Monday with the heaviest snowfall happening Monday afternoon and into the evening.

Hazardous travel conditions are expected with blowing wind causing drifts and low visibility.

South Tama schools had already scheduled to be out of class on Monday for a staff professional development day. Announcements regarding weather-related building closures for staff and extra-curricular activities have not been made as of Sunday afternoon.

Earlier this month South Tama County released a set of guidelines the district uses for considering and communicating winter weather decisions. That letter can be found by clicking here.
