South Tama responds in disaster aid

Students, staff help with cleanup efforts, meal distribution after derecho

Staff members bag meals at the STC Elementary Wednesday, August 12.

Cleanup and food are two of the most basic needs for the Tama-Toledo community following the 2020 derecho storm.

South Tama students and staff are finding ways to meet those needs.

Members of the South Tama football team began cleanup efforts on Tuesday.

Over 20 players and coaches helped clean up downed trees for a longtime supporter of the football program, Dr. Jerry Wille, at the T-T Country Club, Tama Sale Barn and various other locations.

“We helped because we were needed and it was the right thing to do. These boys love their community,” head football coach Nate Doran said.

Another community need is food.

Over 20 Staff, students and city officials worked together to bag over 1000 meals on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“It’s extremely important that our community knows we’re here to help as much as we can and in any way possible. Providing meals to our students and families is just one example. I feel really fortunate to be working in a district with people that look for ways to make things happen even during a time of crisis,” high school principal Mark Groteluschen said.

Food was supplied by Fareway and Dollar Fresh and paid for by the school.

Efforts providing meals will continue Monday, August 17. To get on the list, DM the South Tama County Facebook page.
