Tama considers installing own fuel tanks

Tama City Council members discussed the possibility of installing fuel tanks in an area near the Civic Center- Public Works areas during their regular meeting on Monday night, Oct. 7.

City?Clerk Alyssa Hoskey provided preliminary information from New Century FS on the procedure. Council members indicated they favor adding the tanks if the city budget can be adjusted to pay for the equipment and installation.

Hoskey is to research the logistics of the proposal and provide more information to the council.

Distressed Housing

Council members set a 5 p.m. starting time for the regular meeting on Oct. 21 to allow for discussion of nuisance housing in the city. City council members will individually tour residential areas prior to the date and note progress on the effort to clean up rundown homes.

An innative was begun in June of last year by Mayor Mike Carnahan and the council to address distressed and housing deemed dangerous within the city. Council members and Carnahan formed three groups and toured the city then.

City Attorney Dan Rathjen was directed last year to write letters to property owners warning them to take action to improve the homes found in violation within 30 days.

Some success was noted by city officials to the effort then.

In other business Monday the council:

voted 4-0 to support the proposed Indigenous People Proclamation to be signed on Oct. 14. Voting in favor were members Aaron Haughey, Jeff Ray, Robert Tyynismaa and Emily Babinat. Member Kenny McAdoo was absent. Proclamation story begins on Page 1.

learned a grant application is being prepared through the Region 6 Planning?Commission to aid in the estimated $500,000 in needed repairs to the city’s levee system.

approved a Community Development Block Grant for improvements to a residence at 508 Siegel Street.

discussed revising building permit provisions in city ordinances.

approved a 50 -50 grant purchase totaling $1,400- $1,500 for fire department equipment including nozzles, hoses and masks.

approved liquor sales license permit renewals for El Cerrito and Casey’s General Store.
