George Kaltsas said he hadn’t been feeling well. This was just over a year ago. After a visit to a local health clinic and then the emergency room at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center he found himself whisked to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. There he underwent triple by-pass heart surgery immediately.

His health and recovery forced the closing of his Toledo business.

Now recovered and feeling good, Kaltsas is being joined by a new partner in Granny’s Family Restaurant and Lounge on Business Route 30 West.

Chef Stanley Orfanos and Kaltsas will reopen their restaurant and lounge on March 8. They’re bringing back the same extensive menu with “something for everyone” which had been enjoyed for the five years of George’s ownership.

They’ve been working on the interior with a crew and have it in top shape according to Kaltsas.

You’ll find everything from handmade pizza to seafood and steaks and a full breakfast menu served all day.

There will be a house special each day at noon and night and the buffet will be open at noon.

New will be a Friday night seafood and a Saturday night dinner buffet. On Sunday, a noon buffet will also be offered.

In addition all menu items will be available. There’s a dinner meal selections, sandwiches, gyros, broasted chicken, wraps, stir fry, Mexican and Italian dishes specially prepared by Orfanos.

He brings some 30 years of kitchen experience to Granny’s where he served as chef for two years before the closing. Stanley has owned restaurants including one in Ottumwa for 12 years and in Hampton for eight years.

This experience goes with a near-lifetime in the restaurant business by Kaltsas who owned operations in both Michigan and Wisconsin before coming here.

Granny’s seats about 150 and can host meetings and private parties in the lounge area for up to 60 guests.

All menu offerings also can be ordered to go. Large orders of items such as broasted chicken should be made in advance.

The restaurant will be open Monday-Thursday 11a.m.-9 p.m., 11 a.m.-10 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. on Sunday and closed Mondays.
