Tama-Toledo News Chronicle/John Speer[/caption]Jackie Skala and Jason Carolan ready the Confederate Flag honoring the service of Corporal Stephen Whitty on Friday, May 22, 2020, in perpetration for the display of veterans flags at St. Patrick Cemetery in Tama-Toledo, Iowa, over the Memorial Day weekend. Whitty is the lone Confederate Civil War solider recognized there. Following the war he relocated to Iowa and Tama where he worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 24 years.

Memorial Day activities have been scaled back here and across the nation as the result of COVID-19 precautions. Avenues of Flags are in place at Tama Oak Hill and St. Patrick cemeteries and veterans graves have been marked with flags at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo.

The Chelsea Legion will conduct services beginning at 9 a.m and the Toledo Legion plans to fire the traditional Memorial Day salute to veterans at 11 a.m. at the Tama County Courthouse or at the Legion Post front depending upon weather.
