For the first time since 2010 the South Tama Trojans have advanced in the post season. The Trojans (15-21) travelled to Marion on Friday evening where they met Bondurant-Farrar (11-16) for the first round of Iowa High School Athletic Association Class 3A Substate action.

The evening opened under a sweltering heat with temperatures reaching 92 degrees. South Tama being the home team began on defense and were led from the mound by STC senior, Carter Kriegel.

"After the first pitch I threw I just felt like someone dumped a bucket of water on me. You just have to go out there and deal with it. They are doing the same thing," said Kriegel.

The senior right-hander had an impressive night on the mound especially considering the heat, lasting all seven innings. Kriegel threw 97 pitches, allowing four hits but no runs. He struck out nine and walked just two batters.

"I feel really, really, really, good," said Kriegel, "to get past the first round is something we haven't done in a few years. I'm on top of the world right now."

Kriegel also started for the Trojans from the mound in last season's first round post season game. The Trojans fell to Oskaloosa 14-1 in 2018. He also started for the 2017 post season game against Vinton-Shellsburg in which the Trojans fell 12-3. The victory has been a long time coming for Kriegel and the Trojans.

"I like those opportunities that we don't get a whole lot. I've had two of them in the past that haven't come through and I wasn't going to let that happen again. I went out there and did what I had to do," said Kriegel.

Offensively the Trojans got their bats swinging early in the game for a total of six runs in the bottom of the first. Junior Bluejay pitcher, Brody Sandin led from the pitchers mound. To get things started for the Trojans was STC's Cam Klostermann with a hit to right field. Cael Kellogg got on first after an error by the first baseman. The error allowed for Klostermann to score the first run for STC. Another error by the Bluejays found Kriegel safe at first. With Schmidt on second and K. Smith on first, Brayden Smith came up to bat. The runners advanced after catcher, Mason Simmons, lost control of the ball. Lane Lekin stepped up to bat with two outs and the bases loaded. Lekin hit to center field which brought home two runs. Mickey Wanatee was up next for the Trojans. Another error landed him on base. The bases were once again loaded as Gavin Jimenez was up to bat. He hit a double to left field which brought home Smith. The inning ended with lead off hitter Matt Wiese popping out to right field. The Trojans closed the first inning with four hits, six runs. The Bluejays committed three errors.

STC added one more run to their lead in the bottom of the second inning. K. Smith was courtesy running and scored the Trojans seventh run after an error by the Bluejays.

Bondurant-Farrar's Nathan Anderson relieved Sandin at the mound in the fifth inning. The change up slowed South Tama's offensive production but the damage was already done. Kriegel and Beltz led the Trojans with two hits each and Wiese, Jimenez, Klostermann, Kellogg and Lekin each ended the night with one hit. Lekin and Wanatee each recorded two RBI's.

"(The win) is nice," said coach Seth Koch, "We were close a couple of years ago and lost a heartbreaker to Vinton. Our seeding really hasn't helped us in the last couple of years. We've faced some 1's and 2's in the district. I'm happy for the kids. The kids did the job. Carter went out and did what we asked him to do on the mound just like he has all season. Defensively we only had one mistake defensively. It's nice when you can get that big lead early and take some things away from the other guy and they weren't able to bunt or steal or do what they wanted to do. Fortunately we got the crooked number up early and got some guys in scoring position."

The Trojans were set to face Class 3A 4th ranked Marion on Monday, July 22. Results from the game will be in the Tama News Herald on Friday.
