Tama County Supporting Kids in Prevention (S.K.I.P.) collaborated with Tama County ISU Extension and Outreach, Tama County Public Health and Home Care and Tama County Conservation to hold a Mother Son event at the Tama County Otter Creek Nature Center. Fourteen parents attended with nineteen children to help them be able to bond and enjoy one on one time with each other.

Boys from kindergarten through 6th grade were invited to bring their mothers, step-mothers, aunts, grandmas or a special female figure to have fun fishing, playing outdoor games, have a photo taken, making s 'mores, having hot dogs, chips and bottles of water on their special "date night".

Outdoor game stations were set up to give the "couples" a chance at competing against each other in a fun outdoor atmosphere away from electronics. S'mores and a meal were provided so they could sit down and have a private conversation without any interruptions. A mother has a significant impact on their sons and the way they behave in later years. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "Men are what their mothers made them".

"We felt that this event was a great idea that came to fruition. As we all know there is no handbook that comes with parenting, but the best thing you can do is to try and spend quality time with your children as much as possible", said Lori Johnson, Assistant Director of Tama County Public Health and Home Care. Parents shared things that they had learned were: "identifying a yellow bass, how to fish and how to properly string a pole, the importance of having one on one time with your child, and that they need to do this more often".
