Shopko closing Sunday- Hy-Vee Pharmacy open

May 16, 2019
By John Speer - Editor ( , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

Set to close on Sunday, May 19, is Shopko. The long-time Toledo location housed general merchandise retailers Gibson's, then Pamida and finally Shopko since 2012. (Note:The print edition of The Chronicle reported a s Saturday closing date based upon a large sign posted in the store entrance which stated six days to closing. The last communication received from Shopko headquarters had put the closing date of unday, May 12, but that date is now being reported as extended through Sunday, May 19.)

A bankruptcy filing led to the closing of the company's more than 300 stores across much of the midwest, into the west and south.

Just as sad, some 30 full and part-time employees are out of jobs.

Hy-Vee Pharmacy

Hy-Vee bought the Toledo Shopko Pharmacy along with six other Iowa locations in March and continues to operate from the pharmacy location at Shopko, 1006 South County Road.

So far, Hy-Vee has not announced any future plans other than to assure customers the pharmacy will be here to serve them. Pharmacy hours are 9a.m.- 6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Rumors abound about the future of the location but The Chronicle has not yet been able to verify any plans.

"I was shocked," long-time and now retire Pamida and Shopko manager Cliff Havens, told The Chronicle last week. He said this reaction came upon learning of the impending closing of Shopko earlier this year.

Havens managed the Pamida and Shopko location here for 30 years before his retirement.

He maintains the Toledo location was doing very well then and said he believes all the Iowa locations were performing well.

He said the online buying trends from the likes of Amazon and Best Buy and other big box operations apparently overwhelmed efforts by stores including Shopko to break into that market enough.
