The South Tama County Girls Tennis Team traveled to Maquoketa on May 2 and walked away with a third place finish at the 2019 WaMaC Conference Meet. Despite being delayed over three hours by rain, the Trojans showed amazing consistency throughout the day to place all nine entries into the semi-final rounds of play. In the end, STC grabbed six third place finishes to settle nicely into the top three in the team event. South Tama's third place team finish is its highest finish since rejoining the WaMaC Conference in 2015.

STC Senior Enriquetta Wanatee-Diego made the most of her debut at the WaMaC event as she secured medalist honors at #6 Singles. Wantee-Diego defeated Rachel Axtell of Mount Vernon in the semi-final round by a score of 8-4. The #1 seed of Elizabeth Moore from Independence was a familiar foe for Wanatee-Diego in the final. Less than two weeks prior, the talented senior pushed her opponent in a 7-9 loss. Moore appeared to learn from that close win as she downed Wanatee-Diego 8-1 to win the conference title at #6.

Abbie Morgan represented South Tama at #1 Singles at the WaMaC. She started the quarterfinal round in dominating fashion as she defeated Gabby Goad of Marion 8-0. In the semi-finals, Morgan faced #1 Seed and undefeated Abby Davis of Independence. Morgan's aggressive serves kept her in the match, but in the end Davis was too consistent as she built an 8-3 win. In the consolation round, Morgan fell to Mia Combs of Maquoketa 5-8 to place fourth at #1.

Seeded #3, Zoee Buffalo stepped up to competition at #2 Singles. Advancing to the semifinals, Buffalo faced Ashley Vis of Mount Vernon in a competitive match that featured power from both players. Buffalo's serve proved to be a reliable weapon, but Vis controlled the match with her ground-strokes as she recorded the 8-2 win. Buffalo bounced back in the consolation round to defeat Marion's Marika Bjornsen 8-3 to place third at #2.

STC Senior Anna Glendy advanced to the semi-finals at #3 Singles. Lauren McCollum from Mount Vernon proved to be a frustrating opponent for Glendy as she suffered a 1-8 loss. In the consolation round, Glendy took care of business by easily defeating Sarah Schillinger of Marion by a score of 8-1. Glendy capped her WaMaC career with a third place finish.

Sophomore Hope Werner had the difficult task of facing the #2 Seed from Independence Marina Meyer in the semi-final round at #4 Singles. Werner could never get her footing as she dropped the match1-8. Werner stormed back in the consolation round to defeat Patience Duval 8-2 to claim third place for the Trojans at #4.

Kaylynn Dunn battled hard against Erin Fencl of Mount Vernon at #5 Singles but fell to the experienced senior 3-8. In the consolation round, Dunn saw Maquoketa's Jenna Wiebenga across the net. Dunn grabbed an early 2-1 lead before Wiebenga steadied her game and pushed to an 8-4 victory. Dunn finished in fourth place at #5.

South Tama suffered three heartbreaking losses in the semi-final rounds of doubles play to keep the Trojans out of medalist honors. Morgan/Buffalo were narrowly defeated by Vis/Morrical of Mount Vernon at #1 Doubles in a tiebreaker by a score of 4-7 to drop an 8-9(4) match decision. Werner/Dunn also fell in a tiebreaker at #3 Doubles to the #2 Seeds Fencl/Klotzbach of Mount Vernon 3-7 to drop an 8-9(3) match decision. Seniors Glendy/Wanatee-Diego nearly upset the favorites in #2 Doubles of Zobac/McCollum from Mount Vernon. STC raced to a 5-2 lead before their opponents roared back. In the end, Glendy/Wanatee-Diego fell 7-9.

The Trojans bounced back to secure three third place finishes in doubles action. Morgan/Buffalo defeated Combs/Armbruster of Maquoketa 8-3 at #1 Doubles. Glendy/Wanatee-Diego posted an 8-4 win over Marion's Bjornsen/Duval at #2 Doubles. Werner/Dunn defeated Maquoketa's Wiebenga/Biehl 1-0 in a default.
