Trojans defeat Marion, fall to Independence

STC Girls Tennis Dominates

Marion

The South Tama County Girls Tennis Team recorded their second win over a WaMaC Opponent when they defeated Marion on April 16th by a score of 7-2. The Trojans grabbed two of three doubles matches to start the event. Seniors Abbie Morgan and Zoee Buffalo got STC on the board first when they defeated Sierra Cochran and Marika Bjornsen at #1 Doubles. The talented duo raced to a 5-0 lead as they utilized their wicked serves and agile net play. In the end, Morgan and Buffalo secured an 8-2 win.

Queta Diego and Aubrey Roberts teamed for the first time in varsity action when they faced Patience Duval and Nihya Henderson at #3 Doubles. It took some time for them to find the right chemistry as they fell behind 1-4. Grabbing the momentum, Diego and Roberts fought back to take the lead 6-4. Ultimately tied at 7-7, The Trojans stayed steady and converted the win at 9-7 in a hard fought victory.

Marion grabbed a win at #2 Doubles when Sarah Schillinger and Gabby Goad outlasted Hope Werner and Kaylynn Dunn in a tiebreaker. Werner and Dunn were playing up a spot due to a player illness. The final score was 9-8(6).

South Tama surged to victory in five of six singles matches. Morgan downed Cochran at #1 Singles by a score of 8-4. Buffalo defeated Goad 8-4 at #2 Singles. Werner was forced to move up to play at #3 Singles due to the same player illness. Werner proved she was up to the challenge when she defeated Schillinger 8-2.

Diego found herself playing at #5 Singles when she faced Patience Duvall. In a very close match, Diego inched her way to a 3-2 lead. Utilizing her awesome court coverage, Diego frustrated her opponent into multiple errors. In the end, she recorded a win by the score of 8-3. Aubrey Roberts made the most of the opportunity to play at #6 Singles when she dominated Nihya Henderson. Roberts scorched her opponent in route to an 8-0 win.

Dunn was asked to play at #4 Singles against Bjornsen. Despite falling behind early, Dunn fought back to make the match competitive. In the end, Bjornsen posted an 8-4 victory for Marion.

In JV Action, South Tama defeated Marion 7-4. The following doubles teams recorded wins for STC: Hanah Novotny/Alexes Baeza 6-1, Adriana Cervantes/Grace Novotny 6-1, Allison Thomazin/Alexes Baeza 6-3, Klohe Chyma/Jordyn Cremeans 6-2, Hanah Novotny/Molly Savage 6-4, Richelle Werner/Clarissa Rosenberger 7-6(6), and Lucy Winter Chaser/Delijah Johnson 6-0.

STC Girls Tennis Battles Wind and

Independence

The South Tama County Girls Tennis Team found itself battling two difficult opponents when they traveled to Independence on April 15th to face the Mustangs of Independence in WaMaC Girls Tennis. With wind gusts to over 25 mph, the Trojans knew it would be a difficult night to find success. The undefeated Mustangs also proved a worthy opponent as the Trojans fell 0-9.

South Tama was led by Senior Queta Diego at #6 Singles. She matched up against Elizabeth Moore and frustrated her opponent with excellent footwork and consistent play. Diego built a 6-3 lead before seeing Moore fight back to even things at 6-6. In the end, Moore raised her level of play just enough to snatch the win for the home team by a 9-7 score. Senior Abbie Morgan played well against Abby Davis at #1 Singles; however, Davis converted on the big points to secure an 8-3 win.

The Trojans put up a fight in doubles action as their scores indicate. The #1 Doubles Team of Abbie Morgan/Zoee Buffalo fell to Abby Davis/Megan Brock in a final score of 4-8. Hope Werner and Kaylynn Dunn teamed at #3 Doubles to face Marina Meyer/Elizabeth Moore. The team from Independence recorded the 8-4 win for the Mustangs. Anna Glendy/Queta Diego were defeated by Heidi Lau/Holly Cooksley at #2 Doubles by a score of 1-8.

Independence grabbed victories at #2-#5 Singles to end the Trojans' hopes of a team victory. Buffalo fell at #2 Singles to Lau by a score of 1-8. Glendy was defeated at #3 Singles 1-8 by Brock. Meyer dropped STC's Werner at #4 Singles. South Tama's Kaylynn Dunn fell to Cooksley 1-8.

In JV action, Independence was an 11-3 winner. South Tama recorded wins by the doubles teams of Adriana Cervantes/Grace Novotny 7-5, Hanah Novotny/Allison Thomazin 6-2, and Clarissa Rosenberger/Richelle Werner 6-0.
