South Tama opens season with Mount Vernon, Oskaloosa

STC vs. Mount Vernon

The South Tama County Girls Tennis Team traveled to Mount Vernon on Thursday, April 4 to face the Mustangs on WaMaC Tennis Action. The Trojans fell by a score of 4-5.

Led by Senior Abbie Morgan, the Trojans got on the board early when she posted an 8-3 victory at #1 singles over Megan Zobac. Senior Anna Glendy moved up to play at #2 singles as Senior Zoee Buffalo rested an injured ankle. Despite falling 1-8 to Ashley Vis, Glendy made a fine showing as she pressed most games to deuce repeatedly.

Sophomore Hope Werner raced to a 6-3 lead at #3 Singles before Lauren McCollum steadied her game to tie things at 6-6. Ultimately, Werner was the better player in a deciding tiebreaker where she secured a 9-8(3) win for South Tama. Kaylynn Dunn faced Mandy Morrical at #4 singles. Morrical's forehand was the difference in the match as she built an early lead into an 8-1 victory.

Aubrey Roberts represented South Tama at #5 singles for just her second varsity match in her career. She played well in a 3-8 loss to Rachel Axtell. Jaydee Thiessen rounded out singles play when she faced Erin Fencl at #6 singles. The senior from Mount Vernon was too experienced as she recorded an 8-1 win for the Mustangs.

South Tama nabbed two of three doubles matches when they posted wins at #1 and #3 doubles. Morgan and Werner teamed for the first time and pasted an 8-5 win on Vis/Morrical. Also teaming for the first time were Dunn/Roberts. They capitalized on an early lead in order to build to a convincing win by the score of 8-5. Glendy/Thiessen fell at #2 doubles 1-8 to Zobac/McCollum.

The Trojans notched five wins in junior varsity action against the Mustangs. South Tama's wins came from the doubles teams of Adriana Cervantes/Grace Novotny (2), Abby Kern/Khloe Chyma, Katrina Garcia/Alaria Harken, and Emma Sauerbry/Elysia Aguilera.

STC vs. Oskaloosa

The South Tama County Girls Tennis Team traveled to Oskaloosa on Tuesday, April 2 to face off against Oskaloosa. Despite falling 0-9, the Trojans had their chances in a meet where the home team captured three tiebreakers to secure the win.

STC's Abbie Morgan made her debut at #1 Singles against Ashley Drost. Morgan gained momentum late in the match before falling 4-6, 6-7(8) after narrowly losing a second set tiebreaker. Senior Zoee Buffalo's match at #2 Singles included a myriad of emotions. Despite suffering an ankle injury late in the first set, Buffalo seized the second set and forced a super-tiebreaker to decide the match. Laura Fay snatched the final two points of the super-tiebreaker to earn a 4-6, 6-3, 0-1(8) victory.

Sophomore Hope Werner stepped in at #3 Singles to face Jolie Yang. She dropped the first set 1-6 before recovering to push Yang in the second. In the end, Yang's game was too consistent as she defeated Werner 6-1, 6-4. South Tama's Kaylynn Dunn battled Riz Alesna at #4 Singles. Alesna grabbed a 6-3, 6-1 win.

Sophomore Aubrey Roberts made her varsity debut at #5 Singles when she took on Oskaloosa Senior Madi Holle. Two service breaks decided the match as Holle pushed to a 6-3, 6-3 win. Finally, Junior Jaydee Thiessen played her first varsity match of her career against Senior Darian Jaquez at #6 Singles. Jaquez's experience showed as she rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win.

In doubles action, the #1 doubles team of Morgan/Buffalo battled Drost/Fay as they went the distance. The talented seniors ultimately fell in a super-tiebreaker by a score of 7-5, 0-6, 0-1(6). Werner/Dunn dropped a 0-6,0-6 match at #2 doubles to Yang/Alesna. In the final match of the night, Roberts/Thiessen fell 2-6, 2-6 to Jaquez/Lumsden in #3 doubles action.

South Tama grabbed three wins in junior varsity play. The doubles teams of Katrina Garcia/Lizbeth Sotelo, Emma Sauerbry/Elysia Aguilera, and Grace Novotny/Adriana Cervantes were victorious.
