Shopko files to close rest of stores

Bankrupt Specialty Retail Shops Holding Corp., owner of the Shopko and Shopko Hometown Stores, filed on Monday, March 18, to close the remaining 120 locations which had been spared in a second round of shutdowns announced on Feb. 6.

In the final round, Iowa locations including at Sioux City, Mason City, Dubuque, Dyersville, Humboldt, Sheldon, New Hampton, Waukon,Winterset, Perry, Harlan and Red Oak will now be closed.

The bankruptcy filing came in U.S. District Bankruptcy Court in Nebraska where the action was begun on Jan. 16. At that time voluntary petitions for a court-supervised financial restructuring were filed. It was also announced 11 Iowa Shopkos and a total of 105 company stores throughout the midwest, south and western states would be closed.

Then on Feb. 7, an additional 139 Shopko and Shopko Hometown stores including the Toledo location were added to the closing list. A total of 30 full and parttime employees are expected to be out of jobs in Toledo on the final announced closing date of May 12.

Hy-Vee purchased the assets of the Shopko Pharmacy in Toledo and it has continued in operation at the 1006 S. County Road (U.S. Highway 63) location.
