Tama Council approves loan for fitness center

The Tama Council discussed the Lincoln Highway Bridge, CD Rates and more at a regular council meeting on Monday, Jan. 7. Present for the meeting were council members Emily Babinat, Robert Tyynismaa, Doug Ray, Aaron Haughey, Kenny McAdoo, Mayor Mike Carnahan, City Attorney Dan Rathjen and Public Works Director John Lloyd.

Ashley Aylsworth was present at the previous council meeting in December to discuss her new fitness business, Flex Fitness. The business is going to be in downtown Tama.

There had been a delay in her loan as some of the details with the loan which is through the State Bank of Toledo had changed. New loan paperwork was drawn between the last meeting and the Jan. 7 meeting. Aylsworth is requesting $25,000 in grants from the City of Tama. A mortgage lien on the building will be to State Bank of Toledo.

The Council approved a resolution authorizing and approving a loan under revolving loan program of amended and revised Tama Economic Development and Revitalization plan for Aylsworth.

Lincoln Highway Bridge

Tim Monson, president of Shucks Britson was present to discuss future road work at the Lincoln Highway Bridge. Mark Currie who had been working with the city is moving on to another job.

Babinat asked a question about raising the bridge and if it would effect the historical status. Monson said that it would not. The council voted to remove and grind bridge decking and replace it with concrete. There will be some added expense.

Stop Sign at Hallock and 5th

The council discussed putting a stop sign in the area of Hallock and 5th Street near the recycling center. A round about was suggested. Mayor Carnahan suggested the council take some time to consider to options.

Sponsor for Tama County

Community Foundation Grant

The council discussed sponsoring the Eagles, VFW, Legion and Aquatic Center for any potential Tama County Community Foundation Grants. The council voted unanimously to sponsor these groups should they want a grant from the TCCF.

In other business the council:

approved consent agenda which included bills paid from 12-18-18 through 12-17-18, bills to be paid on 1-7-19 and a liquor license renewal outdoor service Tama Ballroom

the council discussed CD rates. Alyssa Hoskey recommended they do a 12 month cd with the State Bank of Toledo as they had the highest rate. The council voted unanimously to go with The State Bank of Toledo.

voted unanimously to reimburse Iowa Premium in the amount of $81,730.55


-Public Works Director John Lloyd said they got the waste water report back. Some changes will need to be made for how and when they sample. Lloyd also asked for money to implement a storm water utility. There a three chunks of concrete missing near the post office. Tyynismaa asked Lloyd to put together some prices to report back to the council.

-Kenny McAdoo asked for department heads to be at council meetings for requesting money for any potential needs or wants.

-Aaron Haughey raised some issues including excessively barking dogs and parking on burms which is against city ordinance.

-Doug Ray asked about fireworks on New Years Eve. He only heard a few.

-Mike Carnahan received a thank you note from the Adopt a Family organization for allowing them to use city hall. A donation from the LSB Foundation of $3,000 was received.

-Anne Michael informed the council a military convoy will be coming through Tama in the summer. She is hoping they will be able to use the Lincoln Highway Bridge.
