Area schools gather for first meet at STC campus

South Tama could not have asked for a better day to host their first Cross Country meet on the school's campus than what they got on Monday. It was sunny with hardly a cloud in the sky and in the upper 70's. The Trojans hosted several area schools for their annual home invite just like they do every year. The difference this season was the location. The Trojans traded the beauty of Otter Creek for the beauty of the peaks and valleys of the South Tama campus.

Schools in attendance at the meet included East Marshall, Baxter, West Marshall, Grundy Center, Gladbrook-Reinbeck, Belle Plaine, Vinton-Shellsburg, Green Mountain Garwin and BCLUW and Meskwaki.

STC's Callie Frakes had the top finish for the STC girls varsity team. She came in third with a time of 21:34. The time was a pr for the junior as she shaved 33 seconds off her time from her last race.

"I was able to run a bit faster this time and that's what I'm always wanting to do," Frakes said. "I want to gradually cut off time before districts come around."

Frakes said she liked running the course at the school versus Otter Creek. "This is different because we've never done it here on our own course, and it's better because this is where we train and work out, so everything is familiar. You know what's coming next," she said. "The first two miles are fine because it's mostly flat, then you don't expect these hills on the third mile to hit you that much but they are short so it does."

Also competing for the Trojans were Alyssa Chyma who finished 21st (24:50), Makayla Backen, 22nd (24:51), JoJo Tyynismaa, 43rd (26:52), Neena Lasley 49th (28:32), Abbagail Froelich 52nd (28:41), Caitlyn Stochl 55th (29:31) and Kate Froelich.

Meskwaki Settlement School's Shye Johnson came in 17th respectively with a time of 24:22. She is a freshman on the Warrior team.

Vinton-Shellsburg's Kay Fett took first in the run and East Marshall won first as a team with 73 points.

Boys Race

For the boys, STC's Garrett Arp came in 8th with a time of 19:13. Time wise he is right around where he has finished all season albeit a few seconds slower at Monday's meet.

The boys team has a good thing going for them as they ran with a roughly 3.5 minute spread. Considering they are a young team that's a benefit for the Trojans. Arp is the only upperclassman for the Trojans as a junior everyone else is a freshman or sophomore.

Also finishing for STC were 20 - Trusten Rosenberger (20:23), 26 - Logan Arp (20:38), 27 - Jonathan Meyer 20:44, 35 - Jair Sosa (21:12), 42 - Brayden Smith (21:45), and 43 - Clayton Graff (21:53). Also running for the Trojans were Omar Castanon, Ethan Babinat and Mitch Knock.

"Our boys team ran really well, which is what we were hoping for them to do this season," Tyynismaa said. "Garrett ran a smart race and then the guys coming up behind him in Logan and Jonathan Meyer ran well. Meyer went out a little fast but he hung on to that and ran well, there were some surprises on the guys' side as well. If they can keep making those kinds of improvements as the season progresses we will see what happens come conference and districts."

Hosting the meet at the South Tama campus gave the Trojans a practice round for the WaMaC conference meet they will be hosting later this season.

"I think it's extremely valuable for our young team," he said. "Usually you go somewhere and that might be the first time you see that course. They walk the course then they get out there and run it. Here they will have lots of practice, we will be practicing obviously on parts of the course, and I think that will give them lots of confidence when it comes to conference."

Running for Meskwaki Settlement Schools were Taurice Grant who finished 35th (21:09), Tate Bear, 47th (21:54), Zayton Weninger 76th (24:39) and Royce Kapayou 93rd (27:55).

BCLUW won as a team with 60 points. Baxter's Logan Berg won the meet with a time of 17:51.
