As June moves ahead, we inch closer and closer to the baseball and softball post season. The Iowa High School Athletic Association announced post season pairings on Friday, June 22. South Tama was placed in Substate 6 along with Ballard, Benton, Bondurant-Farrar, Nevada, North Polk, Oskaloosa and Pella.

Breaking down the Substate by record at this point in the season Oskaloosa and North Polk sit atop the group, each with 14-5 overall records and no head to head matchups. Bondurant-Farrar comes in next at 12-7. They have already split wins with Nevada and defeated Pella who each sit one game back at 12-8. South Tama comes in with their 10-9 record. Ballard is next at 9-7 and Benton rounds out the group with a 6-14 record.

Brackets and game locations for post season play will be announced during the week of July 2 following a seeding meeting on Sunday, July 1. Predicting what teams will end up being paired together is a bit tricky at this point there is still a full week of baseball to play. Also several teams had cancellations/postponements last week due to weather.

With that said if we were to go off of current standings, some predictions for the Substate 6 pairings might look like this:

No. 1 Oskaloosa vs. No. 8 Benton

No. 4 Pella vs. No. 5 Nevada

No. 2 North Polk vs. No. 7 Ballard

No. 3 Bondurant vs. No. 6 South Tama

As of now, North Polk is the only ranked team in the group at 7th. Oskaloosa received votes but did not get ranked. North Polk was a Class 2A state champion over Beckman in 2014, but have not made any state appearances since moving up to Class 3A. They won over Beckman that year. Oskaloosa was a state qualifier last year but lost in the first round to Harlan, the eventual state champion.

Class 3A Boys Districts begins on Friday, July 13.

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union also recently released pairings. South Tama was placed in Class 3A Region 6. The Trojans will once again face Solon. The two teams met earlier this season. The results were a sheer domination by the Spartans who won 13-0 and 15-1. Solon is ranked 10th in Class 3A with a 14-5 record.

Also playing in region 6 will be Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont vs. Nevada, Vinton-Shellsburg vs. West Marshall and Benton vs. Iowa Falls-Alden.

The contest will be held on Tuesday, July 3 at 7 p.m. in Solon.
