New superintendent chosen for South Tama

Await Result Temporarily

April 11, 2018

South Tama School Board members chose a new superintendent of schools for the district Tuesday night, April 10, but the identity was being withheld at News-Herald deadline at noon on Wednesday. It has been customary, at least in some instances, for the candidate chosen for the position to be allowed to inform his current employer of his acceptance of the new job before a public announcement is made.

That was the case School Board Secretary Mary Boege said Wednesday morning. She sais she expected the name to become public either later in the day on Wednesday or on Thursday.

The three finalists for the position were John Chalstrom, currently a project coordinator for Allen Gray Associates, Boston, Mass., Jared Smith, the current principal at Muscatine schools and Tim Salmon, currently serving as the K-6 principal and superintendent for United Community School District in Boone.

Present interim Superintendent Jeff Berger announced in January he would no longer be a candidate for the position. Berger is paid $140,000 annually.

Interviews by a panel of district residents and school officials of the thre finalist began at noon on Tuesday at the Reinig-Toledo Civic Center. The school board began interviewing the three at 3 -p.m. in clsoed session and finished shortly after 6 p.m. After a short break, the board deliberated in closed session until 8:19 p.m., then reaching a decision.
