Twin sisters, formerly of Toledo, Iowa, drown in Mexico

Two former Toledo residents, twin sisters, were killed Sunday in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, while walking on the beach. Barbara Jo (Sova) Thomas of McKinney, TX and Beverly Ann (Sova) Skripsky of Scottsdale, AZ, both 67, were hit by a rogue wave that carried them out to sea. They both drowned.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Barbara Thomas is the sister-in-law of Larry and Debbie Thomas, Tama and Becky Zeutenhorst, Holiday Lake.

The sisters were born in Eldora, IA on July 29, 1950 to Rudolph and Elsie Sova. Barbara and Beverly attended grade school in the Tama-Toledo area and graduated from Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, IA in 1968. Barbara graduated from the University of Iowa in 1972. Beverly attended Iowa State University and graduated from Northeast Missouri State University in 1974.

Barbara married Steve Thomas of Tama on July 8, 1972. During their 45 years of marriage, they lived in Des Moines, IA, Shawnee, KS, Plano, TX, and McKinney, TX.

Beverly married Harold Skripsky of Cedar Rapids on December 22, 1970. She and her family have lived in Naperville, IL, Telluride, CO, and Scottsdale, AZ.

The sisters were preceded in death by their parents.

Surviving Barbara are her husband Steve Thomas, McKinney, TX, son Todd (Jamille) Thomas, Prosper, TX, and granddaughter Tiffany Thomas.

Surviving Beverly are her husband Harold Skripsky, Scottsdale, AZ, daughter Kelly (Brandon) Hurter, Scottsdale, AZ, son Matthew (Keli) Skripsky, Mattoon, IL and four grandchildren Lincoln Hurter, Oscar Hurter, Elsie Hurter and Ace Skripsky.

The sisters also are survived by two brothers, Thomas Sova, Baton Rouge, LA, and Richard Sova, Barrington, IL.

Lifelong best friends, the twin sisters were inseparable as they planned family get-togethers and joint vacations throughout their lives. They both will be truly missed by all who knew their friendly smiles, warm personalities and kind unwavering spirit\ to help anyone in need.
