Candidate responses to a Chronicle-News-Herald questionnaire

South Tama District 1-

Ronald L. Houghton

Toledo

I graduated from South Tama in 1977. Seven siblings also graduated from South Tama.

My oldest son was a valedictorian at South Tama in 2003.

My wife (Susan) and I currently have three children attending South Tama. Jonah is in 6th grade, Hannah is in 5th grade, and Josiah is in 3rd grade.

Education used to be something we Iowan's could be proud of, our test scores consistently among the nations best.

Given the obvious lack of interest our current administration has shown our Educational System in Washington. And with all the problems our State's administration is having getting even the basic funding and support to our schools require and no hope from the Governor,

I think the best thing we can do is make sure we utilize what we have, work locally to improve what we can, and educate our parents when their votes matter.

Listen, I just want my children to get the best education we can give them right here in our community. With three young children I have a vested interest in our School District and what happens here in the future.

My goal and promise is very simple. I will listen, read, and learn everything I can to make sure any decision I make is fair and honest. The best interest of our students and parents, responsible and efficient Administration.

South Tama District 2

Mandy Lekin

Toledo

I had a community member approach me about running and after much consideration and seeing that no one else was running I felt it was important for someone to step up for our community and school district.

I have been involved in many school organizations during the past years. I have sat on the Tama-Toledo Pool Board, Tama co. empowerment board, and most currently sit on the Tama County Board of Review.

With my husband Jason, we have two children, Taylor, 16, and Lane, 14.

South Tama District 4

Alan Kline

Rural Toledo

It's an exciting and challenging time to be involved in education at any level. I hope to continue to have a positive impact on STC education and maintain the quality educational programs the staff, administration and community work hard to develop.

I am a member of the Wieting Theatre Guild and a Sac and Fox Housing Authority board member.

My wife, Patricia, and I have three grown sons who all graduated from South Tama.

Iowa Valley Director District 6

Joanna Hofer

Rural Toledo

To continue to be of service to my community in the field of education after retiring from 34 years in pre-K-12 education. After earning my AA, BA and MBA degrees while working full-time, I firmly believe in the importance of lifelong learning opportunities for everyone.

Member of T-T Kiwanis, Christ United Methodist Church, South Tama Food Pantry volunteer, retired finance officer of STC Schools and AFA 267. Past member and officer of Iowa Association of School Business Officials.

My husband Mike and i have five children, 15 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, many living in the Iowa Valley Community College District.
