Effective July 1, the name Central Rivers Area Education Agency has taken the place of Area Education Agency 267. Combined in 2003 with AEAs 2 and 7, South Tama and the Meskwaki Settlement schools were served by AEA 6 when the merger of the three agencies took place.

According to the agency's website: "Our agency is one of nine Area Education Agencies in Iowa created in 1974 by the Iowa legislature to ensure equal educational opportunities for all children from birth through age 21. Support to local schools is provided in three, tightly integrated areas: Educational Services, Information and Technology and Special Education."

Today the Central Rivers Area Education Agency serves an area extending from the Minnesota border south to the Montezuma School District and covers all or parts of 18 counties and 53 public and 18 non-public school districts according to website information.

The Meskwaki Settlement School contracts for some services and the agency provides them according to Lori Thomas, Central Rivers Administrative Assistant and Board Secretary.

In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2016, the education agency spent $54.6 million including $10.2 million for instruction, $21.7 million for student support services and $11 million for instructional staff support services. Total revenues were $55.1 million during the same period.

Central Rivers Area Education Agency is scheduled to be housed in new headquarters at 1521 Technology Parkway, Cedar Falls, beginning today, July 5. Other office locations are in Marshalltown and Clear Lake.

Directors are elected to the nine-member board by a combination vote of school districts they serve.
