Christa Slagle DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice) is new to MercyCare, T.ama, but it's like being "home" because, she is a 2005 graduate of South Tama High School. Dr. Slagle is the daughter of Jay and Vickie Hoskey, longtime South Tama High School teachers, with her father teaching biology and currently the varsity football head coach and her mother now retired from a career teaching English here.

Not only does she know the area but is familiar with many of the patients and their families. "A lot of the patients live within one half hour of here," she said.

Dr. Slagle, 28, joined in full-time practice in August at the clinic at 402 Siegel St., downtown. She actually began work in February but the premature birth of daughter, restricted the time she could devote to the job until last month.

"I did some clinical experience here and really loved it, " Dr. Hoskey said last week. "It' a well-run clinic, I see a lot of patients."

She joins Jerry Wille M.D., Amanda Heck, C-PNP and Sherri Vesely, ARNP, BC, DNP to make a total staff of 29 at MercyCare Tama.

Dr. Wille said, "I'm really excited Christa has chosen to join with us. It is great to have a local person return to serve the community."

Dr. Slagle lists patient care in diabetes, hypertension, smoking cessation and womens health follow-up evaluations as some of her particular areas of interest. She maintains being cardiac certified for life support as are other MercyCare staff members. She believes this is valuable because of the variety of patients seen.

Even with the technological advances in the medical field, she says (There's a) "need for face-to-face contact, you can't really replace that."

Christa received her undergraduate degree from Luther College in Decorah in Biology and Psychology in 2009. She received a Bachelor of Science (BSN) in Nursing from Creighton University, Omaha, then worked in the intensive care unit at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

She then returned to school at Creighton earning the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree.

Christa and her husband, Eric, have his three children whom are often with them in addition to their seven-month-old daughter, Arianna. She is a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Tama. Eric Slagle is a contractor and Realtor and a native of western Kansas. They live at Holiday Lake, rural Brooklyn, Iowa.

"Having grown up with that" Christa admits sporting events remain a particular interest.
