Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

(DES MOINES) With the governor recently completing his action on bills passed by the legislature this year, Rep. Dean Fisher (R-Garwin) highlighted the long-term investments made in the Iowa Veterans Home (IVH) in Marshalltown.

Fisher supported, the legislature passed and the governor recently signed provisions in the Rebuild Iowa Infrastructure Fund totaling $10.8 million to replace and update necessary equipment and dormitories in the 2016 fiscal year. These improvements include: replacement of emergency fuel tanks for boilers and power generators, the remodel of the Malloy laundry facilities, and the replacement of air handling units.

Additionally, IVH will receive $2.5 million for the fiscal year 2017, the full amount they requested. This investment will go toward renovating the ramp between the Loftus and Malloy buildings to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and renovations to Scheeler and Loftus buildings.

"The home and its staff are tasked with such an important mission taking care of Iowa's heroes," said Rep. Fisher. "I'm pleased we could deliver the necessary funding to keep up with the infrastructure needs to aid in the quality of care our veterans are given."

According to the nonpartisan Legislative Services Agency, the Rebuild Iowa Infrastructure Fund uses wagering taxes and fees from Iowa casinos to fund infrastructure-related projects throughout the state.
