DES?MOINES- The Iowa League of Cities presented Senator Steve Sodders (D-State Center) with a 2014 Legislative Service Award, during the Iowa League of Cities Annual Conference & Exhibit in Council Bluffs on Sept. 25 for his support of local decision-making for cities.

Sodders represents Tama, and portions of Marshall and Black Hawk counties in the Iow Legislature.

These awards recognize legislators who have made extraordinary efforts on behalf of the cities during the past legislative session, and have demonstrated their willingness not only to engage, but also to lead the way for Iowa's cities.

The ability to make decisions at the local level is extremely important to League members and the organization wanted to highlight a legislator who supports Home Rule. In 1968, Iowa voters passed an amendment to the Iowa Constitution commonly called the Home Rule Amendment. This gave cities the authority to decide what is best for their community.

"Senator Sodders showed receptiveness and responsiveness to the ability for cities in his district to make decisions at the local level so the League wanted to show our support for his efforts," said Alan Kemp, Executive Director of the Iowa League of Cities."
