Richard (Dick) John Van De Walle, 87, Grinnell and formerly of Chelsea, died on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at St Francis Manor in Grinnell. Services are on Aug. 27 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Chelsea with Deacon Joe Behounek presiding. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Chelsea with military honors by Benda-Sell American Legion Post 269 of Chelsea. Pallbearers will be Gene Upah, Tom L. Upah, Mark Vavroch, Zane Van De Walle Grant Van De Walle and Nathan Van De Walle.
Dick was born on July 3, 1927, the son of Camiel and Blanche (Musel) Van De Walle in Chelsea. He graduated from Chelsea High School and Cedar Rapids Barber College. He served his country for two years during the Korean War.
Mary Lou Upah and Dick were married on July 25, 1953, at St. Joseph's Church in Chelsea.

He was a long-time barber in Chelsea and drove a school bus for several years. He was a member and former chief of the Chelsea Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of St. Joseph's Parish.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou, children, Rick (Jodi) Van De Walle, Chelsea; Julie (Mark) Vavroch, Montezuma; and Susan (Wayne) Glenn, Quincy, Ill.; brothers and sisters, Marilyn Meisterm David (Suzi) Van De Walle and Cheryl (Dick) Duhachek; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grand-children.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Amy Marie.
