The seventh and eight grade baseball and softball teams had a solid 2014 summer season. The middle school teams played opponents from the NICL west conference including Gladbrook-Reinbeck, Grundy Center, South Hardin, BCLUW, East Marshall, AGWSR and West Marshall.
Dave Nitz has been coaching middle school baseball for several years and he was happy with the season and thought the boys did a nice job. This season was a record setting year for participation as 28 students suited up to play.
The seventh grade team was 4-1-1 on their season. They tied one game, as there is a time limit in middle school play. "The season was a real learning experience for the seventh graders," said Nitz. In seventh grade there is a jump from 60 feet to 90-foot bases and the pitching distance is also greater.

The eighth grade team went 6-2 on the season losing one game to Grundy Center and another to AGWSR. Some of the current eighth graders got some great experience at the varsity level. Six of the boys were called up to fill in due to injuries on the varsity team. Nitz felt the eight graders did some really good things, saying "All the kids have an opportunity to develop into a nice baseball team.
The seventh and eight grade softball teams finished 3-6 this season. A highlight of the season according to coach Cally Thompson was a close win against West Marshall. "It was a close game and West Marshall was good competition for us. The girls came out to play with confidence and positivity. It was really great to see the girls play with passion and excitement in that game! I'm really proud of the girls and their hard work this season," said Thompson. The Trojans ended up topping West Marshall 12-11.
