Marguerite Youngbear-Bass

Marguerite Youngbear-Bass, 67, of Tama passed away Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, at her home on the Meskwaki Settlement under the care of Iowa River Hospice. Traditional Graveside Services will be held Saturday, Aug. 9, at 2 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama with Michael Keahna as speaker. A Traditional Wake will be held Friday evening, Aug. 8, at the Native American Drum Society Roundhouse on the Meskwaki Settlement.

Marguerite was born on July 20, 1947, in Marshalltown, the daughter of Agnes Shuckahosee and Dewey Youngbear.

She graduated from South Tama County School and attended Haskell Institute in Lawrence, KS. Marguerite had worked as a PBX receptionist at Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel, receptionist at Meskwaki Public Works, Tutor Aide for South Tama Schools, Amana Refrigeration and nurse's aide at Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center.

Survivors include her mother, Agnes Shuckahosee of Tama; a granddaughter whom she raised as a daughter, Lourdes Avalos; adopted father, Myron Wanatee Sr.; three daughters, Margaret Shuckahosee of Tama, Dawn Marland of Lawrence, KS and Ladonna Marland of Tama; one son, Dewey (Avis) Bass of Toledo; eight sisters, Mary (Gerald) Sanache of Tama, Hattie (Dean) Whitebreast of Montour, Amelia Grant of Altoona, Dayle (George) Iverson of Altoona, Ramona Sanache of Tama, Georgia Sanache of Tama, Georgette Sanache of Tama, and Jerlyn Sanache of Tama; four brothers, Charles (Kathy) Shuckahosee of Toledo, Raymond (Daria) Slick Jr. of Tama, Kirby (Patti) Grant of Yuma, AZ and Preston Duncan of Montour; an uncle Isaac (Elizabeth) Roberts of Tama; grandkids, great-grandkids; several nieces and nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her fathers, Dewey Youngbear who passed away shortly after her birth and Isaac Shuckahosee Jr. who raised her to adulthood; her maternal grandparents, Charles and Mary Davenport; her paternal grandparent, Robert Youngbear; aunts, Bernice Sanache, Rose Eagle, Alice Poweshiek, Mary D. Youngbear, Flora Hecke, Rose Youngbear, Lida Youngbear, Mary Youngbear; uncles, George Soldier, Harvey Davenport Sr., Edward Davenport Sr., David, Rolland and Laverne Youngbear.

Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home, Tama-Toledo is assisting the family with the arrangements.
