Young Bears give Powwow preview on live TV

Meskwaki Settlement - On behalf of the 100th Annual Meskwaki Pow Wow, the Woodland Singers and Dancers, under the direction of Stella and Ray Young Bear, presented several Meskwaki dances on KCWI-TV's Great Day morning program in Des Moines on Aug. 6. The Powwow runs Thursday -Sunday, Aug. 7-10, in the arena area at the Meskwaki Bingo * Casino, four mails west of Toeldo on the U.S. Highway 30 Expressway.

The dance performers were Caitlin Jefferson, Junior Princess of the pow-wow including Micah, Miko, and Rosie Young Bear. Providing the music were Stella and Ray.

After the performances, Ray presented his Rock Island Hiking Club poetry books to the Great Day Hosts, Jackie Schmillen, Lou Sipolt and Jason Parkin. Stella gave Jackie a pair of her hand-crafted earrings. Ray also gave a poster-size artwork to Mike Cunningham, Great Day's producer.

"Although we were all understandably nervous on live TV, it was a fun, leaming experience for the kids. They all did a great job," said Ray. "It was done to promote the Meskwaki powwow."
