-Third in Series-
South Tama County United Fund (STCUF) is a local non-profit organization serving 16 other agencies. These agencies are local organizations that depend on the gifts given by STCUF each year.
Our campaign is from a period beginning in August through mid-November. Our goal this year is to raise $50,000 to meet the needs of the agencies.
CIRSI Opportunity Center in Tama.
One of the main goals is to combine fundraising efforts in the South Tama Community.
These funds come from donations from people like you and community organizations and serve a wide variety of community needs.
CIRSI's Tama Opportunity Center received a generous donation from the South Tama County United Fund and was able to use some of the donation money to pay for transportation for our entire group to the Des Moines Botanical Gardens.
We were able to rent a Region 6 handicap accessible van so that all of us could go to Des Moines together. Fourteen participants went to the Botanical Center and for a few it was their first time there.
The participants were very excited to see, smell and touch the trees, plants and flowers. Everyone enjoyed the trip and would like to return in the future. Some of the donation money was then used to purchase colored glass for our participants to use on art projects. We have some participants that greatly enjoy making glass mosaic gazing balls. This is an activity that gives some of our participants great joy and they are very proud of the beautiful gazing balls they are able to create. When one saw all the different colors of glass we were able to purchase with this money he was overjoyed and said it felt like Christmas.
We plan to use the remainder of the donation money for transportation expenses associated with our volunteer activities. This donation has helped our program to continue doing what we are here to do, enrich the lives of people with intellectual disabilities.
The Tama Opportunity Center participants deliver for Meals on Wheels two weeks every month, do food donation pickups from local businesses for the food pantry three days a week, clean toys at the elementary school every Wednesday, clean the Toledo Wieting Theater every Monday, help out at Carrington Place every Friday morning and help clean at the humane society every Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
The participants enjoy helping our community members and take great pride in the volunteer work they do.
