Tama County Hunter Safety Course offered

July 25, 2014
From: Craig Fish , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

The 2014-15 hunting seasons will be here before we know it. Every year I receive phone calls days before the season starts from individuals needing to take hunter education. By that time it's too late to take a class. Most class offerings come to an end by the end of August.

Anyone born after Jan. 1, 1972, is required to have passed a hunter education course prior to purchasing a hunting license. The last hunter education class offered in Tama County this year will be held July 31, Aug. 1 and 2. This class will be held at the Nature Center at Otter Creek Lake northeast of Toledo. This class was formerly held at the Pioneer Plant in Toledo for the past 20 years.

Students ages 12 and older will be issued a hunter education certificate upon successful completion of this class. All students need to pre-register at the Iowa DNR website: If a student is under age 18, a parent will need to log onto the website to register the student. When the student registers for the class, he / she will need to have their full name, birth date, address, phone number and social security number.

The student will pick up a course manual the first night of class. All students will be required to attend all three class sessions and take a written exam in order to pass. The class will be held Thursday, July 31, from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m.; Friday, Aug. 1, 5:30 - 8:30 p.m.; and Saturday, Aug. 2 from 9 - 11:30 a.m. On Saturday morning students will have live firing at the Ike's Tract Shooting Range west of Toledo. Parents will need to drop off and pick up their student at the Ike's Tract on August 2.

If you have questions contact Craig W. Fish at 484-2141 Ext. 213. This is a free class and will be limited to the first 30 students to register. Phone registrations will not be accepted; you must register through the DNR website. Please note that this registration process is a change from the past.
