Great weather brings out runners for Harry Gardner 5K

July 23, 2014
Submitted by George Kuhter , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

Cool temperatures and low humidity greeted the 50 competitors for the 23rd Annual Harry Gardner/Toledo 5K on July 3rd. Although number were the lowest in recent years, many of the people in the race set or came close to personal best times on the streets of Toledo. The overall winners were former area residents Tyler Husak, presently teaching and coaching in Olin, Iowa and Dee Dee Nims of Robins, Iowa. Both winners ran fast times coming in at 17:34 and 22:48 respectively.

In the annual Family Challenge races the winners were: Chris and Kinnick Nims in the Father and Son Division and Dee Dee and Kinnick Nims in the Mother and Son Division. The Mother and Daughter Division was won by Julie and Mallory Thede of Toledo with the Father and Daughter Division won by Steve Ryan and Elizabeth Wise for the second year in a row. Of the participants in the race a few outstanding performances should be noted such as Lexi Nims at age five as the youngest competitor and Dick Doyle as the oldest at age 78. The only person who has ever participated in the race who was older than Mr. Doyle was long time Toledo resident and race co-founder Harry Gardner himself.

Travelling the furthest to race on this beautiful day were Riley Fowler who came from Georgia and LeAnn Finnigan who came from New York. Congratulation to all and thank you for supporting the STC Cross Country teams by participating in this race. We hope to see many more area residents next year!

They’re off on Thursday night, July 3, for the annual Harry Gardner Jr. - Toledo 5K Run and Walk. July’s somewhat unseasonably cool weather made the event enjoyable for those taking part.
