Gordon Lasley Jr., 26, charged with two counts of 1st degree murder in the death of his parents, has had the start of his trial extended for just over a month to Dec. 8.

In a motion to continue the trial filed by Lasley's attorney Jill Johnston, it is noted the case is "complex" and a mental health expert's testimony being used for part of his defense cannot be ready by the dates previously set.

U.S. Chief Judge Linda R. Reade said in an order granting the continuance it was recognized the case was complex. She ruled not granting an extension would deny Lasley reasonable time necessary for the effective preparation of his defense.

Johnston is an attorney in the Federal Defender's Office in Cedar Rapids.

Lasley was charged with killing his father Gordon Lasley Sr., 60, and mother Kim Johnson Lasley, 57, with a machete in their home on the Meskwaki Settlement wets of Tama on the night of Feb. 5.

Gordon Lasley Jr. was arrested early on Feb. 6 and first charged with two counts of 1st degree murder in Tama County District court by Meskwaki Nation Tribal Police Detective Craig Karr. He has been in custody since the orignal charges were filed.

The case was transferred to federal jurisdiction because the crimes allegedly occurred in Indian Country and are often moved to the federal level.
