Chelsea residents told The Chronicle - News-Herald on Wednesday afternoon most of their fellow residents had evacuated their town before flood waters rose high this week. Water began creeping into the southeast Tama County town Sunday night, they said, and some sandbagging was done.
With heavy rains Monday upstream on the Iowa River and other streams and creeks and locally, they said they were "sunk."

A few residents remained in their homes and were entering via boat on Wednesday afternoon.
The town experienced heavy flooding last summer as well, as is known to have suffered from significant flooding over the years.
