Carrie Kupka wins Iowa food use culinary award

On May 4, the Riverside Casino & Golf Resort in Riverside Iowa held its 5th annual Riverside Culinary Classic. This is sponsored by the Give Foundation (Golf for Injured Veterans Everywhere).

This year to increase awareness and exposure of top quality, local Iowa produced food; all competitors were challenged to utilize local Iowa foods in their preparations. In order to qualify for this additional prize, competitors had to incorporate Iowa produced food in their preparations either as a main or complementary ingredient.

The winner of this award was Carrie Kupka from Walford, Iowa. Carrie was sponsored by Phat Daddy's of Marengo where she is a chef.

Her winning entry was Triple "P" Pork, Popcorn, and Peanuts. It was like eating a candy bar with a hint of bacon.

Carrie is a 2002 graduate of South Tama High School and graduated from the Culinary Institute at Kirkwood Community College, Cedar Rapids.

There were 8 category entries; soup, salad, duck, seafood, pork, dessert, beef, and a student category entry.

The top prize is "Best of Show" which is $2,500 and a trophy.
