Schissel to head Toledo Water, Waste Water departments

Garrett Schissel, the city's new Water and Waste Water II operator, was introduced to the Toledo City Council Monday night. He will begin work under Public Works Director Mark Zmolek on July 1.

Schissel, 21, was hired at an annual salary of $41,267.

He first gained experience in the field working with the water operator in his hometown of Ossian in Winneshiek County in northeast Iowa.

Schissel then moved on to Des Moines Area Community College at Ankeny where he became the first graduate of DMAC's water operator.

In Toledo, he'll be on the ground floor of water treatment as construction of the city's new $3 million treatment plant is expected to begin in mid-July. the new plant will replace one built in the mid 1960s.

Schissel said he chose the Toledo job "Because I enjoy small town living."
