If you were to predict the outcome of a game off of one inning the future looked bleak for the Trojans on Wednesday June 11. However sometimes good things come to those who wait and the Trojans were able to capitalize on some rough Lisbon pitching closing an early lead for the Lions. South Tama played the Lisbon Lions currently a 1A team who hale from the Tri Rivers Conference.
The Trojan batting order consisted of Kolton Smith, Cody Kellogg, Grant Koch, Dalton Doyle, Colton Vest, Bailey Chyma, Damon Whitebreast, Lane Koch and Blake Keller. This was a slight change for the Trojans as they continue to battle illness
The two teams have a fairly similar line-up as the Lions have also pulled more than an handful of eighth graders to complete their varsity roster. South Tama's eighth grade count is six versus the Lions seven eighth grade players. Their records are very similar as well with the Trojans going into last nights matchup at 4-5 compared to the Lions record of 6-5.

When it came time for the opening pitch by STC's Damon Whitebreast it was anyone's game. The Lions, though, made it very clear who was king of the pride with an impressive start offensively scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. It took pitching through the entire Lion order before Kolton Smith was able to get a stop for the Trojans from a pop up by Hunter Robinson.
Offensively the first two innings looked dismal for the Trojans. G. Koch hit a medium grounder for a single and was able to advance after Doyle was hit by the junior pitcher Keegan Tritle. However they were left on base after Thede struck out after the fifth pitch.
Things finally got rolling offensively for the Trojans in the bottom of the third. Tritle, who pitched four and a third for the Lions began to struggle on the mound. Keller was first up to bat for the Trojans and was walked by Tritle. Another walk by Tritle moved Keller to second and put Smith on base. Kellogg struck out followed by G. Koch hitting another medium line drive which advanced Keller to third and Smith to second. Up next at the plate was Doyle who was walked which brought Keller in for the first run scored for the Trojans. Smith scored run two as Thede was walked to first. The final run scored in the inning was by G. Koch after Nick Ryan was walked.

Whitebreast struck out for the third out of the inning bringing up the top of the fourth and a shift in momentum as the Trojans gained some confidence after putting points on the board.
The fourth inning was a defensive battle between the Lions and Trojans with both teams getting quick outs bringing up the fifth inning with the score remaining 3-8.
The Trojans would go on the score three more runs starting in the bottom of the fifth holding the Lions to just one run scored after the fifth. Lane Koch substituted for Whitebreast in the bottom of the fifth. Hitting a medium grounder, a Koch brothers specialty, Lane was able to bring home Tanner Probasco and Thede for two runs.
However it wouldn't be enough to close the gap.
Both teams had a change in their pitching staff with Woodward Conner replacing Tritle midway through the bottom of the fifth after Tritle threw his 111 pitch of the game. Smith traded out Whitebreast for the sixth and seventh innings.
Smith had one earned run made by Brett Givens after a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Schrantz advancing Givens to second. Givens was brought home from a medium line drive by Connor.
Smith was able to score one final run for the Trojans after getting hit by Connor. Smith took the hit like a champ and was able to stick it out. Kellogg, normally a solid hitter for the Trojans had been tense at the plate all night but was finally able to settle in for a medium line drive for a single. G. Koch who had a successful night at the plate didn't let the Trojans down as he hit a soft grounder for a single. Smith was able to make it home after a passed ball advancing Kellogg to third.
The game ended with Kellogg and Koch stranded on first and third as Thede struck out looking leaving the Trojans short 6-10.
STC will have a very busy week with games each night of the week. They will close out the week at home on Thursday and Friday featuring JV/Varsity duals against AGWSR and North Tama.
