It was a pit," Tama Mayor Dan Zimmerman told city council members at their meeting Monday night. Trash littering Tama's new Skateboard Park at 9th and McClellan prompted the mayor to direct the street department to shut down the park over the past weekend, from May 31-June 2.
Wooden snowfence was used to encircle the the ramps in the skate area. City workers had installed hte post supports for basketball hoops on the west side of the park area last week, but had not yet put up the hoops.
Zimmerman along with other city officials have said part of the plan for the park area was for those using it to make sure it was maintained.
Private donations along with city funds totaling some $28,000 went into paying for the concrete and equipment for the area which a number of kids had sought for a period of years.
It ws reopened at mid-afternoon on Monday.
Garbage cans have now been placed at the park and city officials said they will continue to monitor the area which must be kept clean.
