Hoefling tops Branstad among Toledo GOP Voters

June 3, 2014
By John Speer - Editor (jspeer@tamatoledonews.com) , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

Republican voters in Toledo favored Republican Governor challenger Tom Hoefling over incumbent Terry Branstad by a 64-57 vote margin in the Tuesday Iowa Primary election in unoffial returns. About 25 percent of the registered 491 Republicans in Toledo turned out to cast ballots. In Tama, Branstad won by a single vote- 41-40. Sate-wide, totals showed Branstad winning some 81 percent of the vote with roughly 65 percent of the vote total in.

Overall in Tama County the Governor received 588 votes to 266 for Hoefling.

It is speculated the local vote was likely influenced by Branstad's decision to close the Iowa Juvenile Home /State Training School for Girls in Toledo in January. The 94-year-old state institution was Toledo's largest single employer and left more than 90 employees without jobs.

Branstad has defended the move based upon an investigation by a federally-funded lawyer group, Disability Rights Iowa, which alleged practices in affording proper education for students and confinement times in quiet rooms were illegal.
