ST/EM came out with a fire in their eyes and it showed in their play on this evening. ST/EM took the opening kick and the game was on. ST/EM pushed into the CAL end, and kept the pressure on. In the 5th minute Socorro Mendoza got the ST/EM on the score board with the assist going to Cynthia Lares. In the 12th minute Dani Stubbs scored on a good run, beating the CAL goalie to the far post for a 2-0 lead. ST/EM switched goalies with Hannah Keckler going into the game, and Sam Early taking the field. In the 17th minute, Sam got the third goal, and 2 minutes later, Dani Stubbs got her second goal of the game. In the 23rd minute Araceli Angel got the 5th goal of the game with the assist going to Mona Nunez. In the 35th minute ST/EM was awarded a PK, but Hailee Weiss shot high. In the 40th minute, Araceli Angle got her 2nd goal of the game with Erin Filloon getting the assist. And this is the way the half ended with ST/EM holding a 6-0 lead. ST/EM substituted during the first half with all players seeing action.
In the second half, ST/EM kept the pressure up, and controlling the action. In the 44th minute, Mona Nunez got a goal to make the score 7-0. Hailee Weiss got the first goal of her soccer career at ST/EM in the 54 minute mark on a free kick from 30 yards out. Cynthia Lares scored at the 60 minute mark for a 9-0 lead, and Araceli Angle finished the scoring at the67 minute mark with the assist again going to Mona Munez for the 10-0 win.
This is the only second time that the ST/EM team has advanced to the next round of regionals. And it will be a huge challenge, as the team will travel next Tuesday to take on #1 Waverly at Waverly. But this win will help the confidence of the team. This was a good game for the ST/EM players, and it showed in every way. Hannah Kecker touched the ball just once. ST/EM had 12 corners to 0 for CAL. ST/EM had 34 shots to 1 for Cal, with 23 of the shots being on goal.
This was a total team effort, from the starters to the subs. Again ST/EM will have to take this and translate this into a total team effort come Tuesday. This will be the toughest test of the year for the team. Win or lose, I am very proud of what this team has done this season.
