The Lincoln Highway through Tama

May 15, 2014
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

Dear Editor,

Satisfying is the work of the many community members that are beautifying the Lincoln Highway Bridge Park.

The tremendous vision and work that is being completed to highlight this great monument to the fallen President, Abraham Lincoln.

The Lincoln Highway was dedicated one hundred years ago as a Memorial in Honor of the Lincoln. At the that time in history it was a great honor to have the Lincoln Highway Route included into your community. The vast economic benefits to the communities was the reward for inclusion on the route.

Tama, Iowa was prominent in the promotion of the highway, and in 1914 the Tama Community bonded together to build a bridge. The bridge, now know as the Lincoln Highway Bridge was to become the one and only signature "Lincoln Highway" Bridge. A one of its kind in design and distinction.

The Tama Community should be proud of this National Landmark. To the credit of the many community volunteers and the city leaders, we shall maintain, improve and reap benefits from this great tribute to Abraham Lincoln. We should all thank the support being received in many forms for the beautification of the park and bridge.

An American Flag flying is our reminder that we shall survive in a positive future.

It is more than a bridge and street it is an identity to our communities, a gateway and gift with economic benefits.

Allan M. Richards

Lincoln Highway Consul,

Tama County

Past President,

Iowa Lincoln Highway Association
